Morocco and Malawi meet in this round of 16 encounter of the AFCON Championships at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde. Morocco came into the tournament as one of the favourites and certainly lived up to that billing by topping Group C. Malawi came through the group phase by being one of the best third placed teams in the group stage. Morocco ended their group with seven points with two wins and a draw. Their only loss in their last 32 matches was a defeat to Algeria on penalties in the Arab Cup. They showed their fighting spirit in their last match when they twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw with Gabon. The two goals conceded against Gabon is the same number of goals they have conceded in their last nine matches. Morocco have never lost to Malawi in the last six matches against them with three wins and three draws.

Malawi eventually finished the group stage as the best third placed team from all the groups. They looked to have a slim chance of qualifying after they lost their first match but bounced back with a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe in the second match. They saved their best performance for their final group match when they held the much fancied Senegal to a goalless draw. Malawi will need to find a way to get their strikers firing as they failed to score in two of their three matches. Their goal scoring situation will be made all the more difficult in this match as their opponents have only conceded 4 goals in their last 10 matches.
