Mexico are on the cusp of qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to host El Salvador in their final qualification game. They go into this game on 25 points and in third place while their visitors are sixth with 10 points. Mexico’s 1-0 win over Honduras in their last game was laboured but they managed to see it through with another poor show in attack. They have now gone unbeaten in six matches and at the least, they are assured of a playoff spot. El Tri only need a draw to book their place, or at least match fourth placed Costa Rica’s result. They haven’t scored more than a goal in the last four matches but head into this game with four straight clean sheets. In World Cup qualification, Mexico are unbeaten in 16 home matches and they have nine straight wins over El Salvador ahead of this clash.

El Salvador’s journey to the 2022 World Cup ended a while ago. For them this is just a formality and they travel to an opponent they've beaten just twice in the last 18 meetings. They are coming from yet another loss, 2-1 at home to Costa Rica - their third loss in five matches and third straight winless outing. El Salvador have one clean sheet and failed to score in two of their last five matches while this was the second time in three matches that they’ve conceded two goals. It won’t be easy for them here, looking at a recent run where they have managed just a win and eight losses in the last 12 outings . While they are unbeaten in the last two matches at home, they have lost three of the last five and against Mexico, it hasn’t been rosy at all for the visitors here, who have suffered 16 losses in the last 18 meetings.
