Off the heartbreak of a first-round exit in the Wuhan Open, McCartney Kessler bounced back with a statement performance in her Ningbo Open round-32 clash. She ousted World No. 26 and fellow American Sofia Kenin in straight sets to book her spot in the round of 16. 

The Florida-born three-time WTA singles champion won 100% of her service games to secure a 6-1, 6-0 win over the 2020 Australian Open champion. She has won four of her last six matches and boasts better recent form than Liudmila Samsonova.

Liudmila Samsonova defeated 190th-ranked Hanyu Guo 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday to qualify for the Ningbo Open round of 16. This marked a third win in four matches for the Russian sensation. 

However, she has lost three of her last six matches. This culminated in premature exits in the US, Beijing, and Wuhan tournaments. The 26-year-old has also struggled for results on hard courts, losing six of her recent 12 appearances on the surface.
