Mauritania welcomes Gambia to the Limbe Stadium in this opening round encounter in Group C of AFCON 2023. They have had two friendly internationals coming into this tournament, drawing both matches. In the recently concluded Arab Cup they failed to make it out of the group stage as they lost two matches and won one against Syria. They have met Gambia on five previous occasions with Mauritania winning once and Gabon winning twice although the last match was eventually won by Gambia on penalties. There have been two draws as well. Mauritania have only one win in their last 12 matches. They will be looking at Aboubakar Kamara, formerly of Fulham, to be their main attacking weapon and he is one of the only players with European playing experience.

Gambia will be ring rusty coming into this match having last played competitive football back in March 2021. Since then they have played six friendly internationals with three wins and three draws in these matches. One of the friendly matches saw them suffer an embarrassing 7-2 loss to a Moroccan B team albeit they did not have their strongest team playing. Prior to these friendlies they played in the AFCON qualifiers where they topped their group to qualify. Gambia have not had a drawn match in their last eleven games with five losses and six draws.
