Ninth seed Nicolas Jarry begins his 2024 Barcelona Open campaign. The Chilean takes on the qualifier Argentinian Marco Trungelliti in round two of this outdoor clay court tournament. Another Argentininan could be faced in the last eight if eighth seed Sebastian Baez gets past unseeded Matteo Arnaldi. Jarry is 22nd in the live rankings but was as high as 18th in January. He reached the final of the clay court tournament held in Buenos Aires earlier this year. That run included a win over Carlos Alcaraz but he lost to Facundo Diaz Acosta in the title decider. SInce then, he's got to the quarter-finals in Santiago and also the hard court Miami Masters tournament. Recent form on clay has seen him lose his first match in Monte Carlo last week being beaten by Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Jarry is 27th in the ATP Live Race.

Marco Trungelliti had to win two qualifying matches to get into the main draw. Three sets were needed to beat Pablo Llas Ruiz and he then defeated Gianluca Mager for the loss of just four games. He then beat fellow qualifier Duje Ajdukovic in straight sets to reach this second round. Those three wins have taken him up to 176th in the live rankings. This year has seen him playing mainly on the Challenger Tour with two hard court quarter finals reached and a final in both the Kigali clay court events. This is the first time he's reached the main draw of an ATP Tour event in 2024. He lost to Jarry in straight sets in the last 64 of this tournament last year. That was played nine years after Trungelliti had won a clay court Challenger Tour event against Jarry who was ranked 224th at the time. We go for Jarry to win this in straight sets.
