There’s a Carabao Cup cracker at Anfield this week as Arne Slot’s Liverpool hosts Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham in the Third round. Will the Reds continue their excellent start to the season, or can the Hammers knock the current Carabao Cup holders out of the tournament? Let’s take a closer look at our prediction for this exciting match!
Liverpool are the most successful team in Carabao Cup history, winning the trophy ten times, including last season when beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final at Wembley. Their first-ever victory in the competition came in 1981, when they beat West Ham 2-1 in a replay after a 1-1 draw at Wembley. This will be the Reds first tie in defence of the trophy that they have won twice in the past three years.
West Ham have never won this competition. As mentioned above, they lost in the final to Liverpool in 1981 and were also losing finalists in 1966, when they were defeated 5-3 in a two-legged final against West Brom. The Hammers started in the Carabao Cup Second round this year, beating Bournemouth 1-0 at the London Stadium to earn this tie against Liverpool.

Liverpool - West Ham: Form Analysis
Liverpool sit second in the Premier League table, just a point behind Manchester City and with just one defeat in six games in all competitions this season. They have been outstanding defensively, conceding just one goal in their five Premier League games.
The Reds warmed up for this fixture with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Anfield at the weekend. Luis Diaz registered his fourth and fifth goals of the season in that fixture.
Darwin Nunez also grabbed his first goal of the new season.
That followed a hugely impressive 3-1 win away to AC Milan in their opening Champions League game of the campaign. Those two wins put the Reds back to good form following their shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield beforehand.
In contrast, West Ham have not had the best of starts this season. Julen Lopetegui’s team have won just one of five games in the Premier League this season, a 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace, drawing one and losing three.
The Hammers went down to a 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea at the weekend in what was a very below-par display by the team. It was the second home game in a row where they had conceded three goals after losing 3-1 to Manchester City just before the international break.
In between those games, they drew 1-1 away to Fulham, where they snatched a fortunate 95th-minute equaliser through Danny Ings.

Liverpool & West Ham Squad Analysis
With Liverpool in action in Europe alongside their domestic commitments, it is very likely manager Arne Slot will rotate a number of his players for this game with West Ham United on Wednesday night.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who missed the game with Bournemouth due to injury, would likely have been rested for Caoiminh Kelleher for this game anyway. Additionally, the likes of Federico Chiesa, Wataru Endo, Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones should all have a good chance of a rare start.
Young midfielder Harvey Elliott is sidelined through injury.
It will be interesting to see if Julen Lopetegui decides to rest any of his West Ham players for this game. Given their poor start to the season, he may be tempted to go with a strong team, or he could elect to give some key players a rest while keeping the nucleus of the first team together.
Lopetegui chose the latter option against Bournemouth in the last round, with Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus, and Konstantinos Mavropanos rested.
Lukasz Fabianski may get the opportunity to start in goal once again, while Jean-Clair Todibo could come in for Mavropanos. Aaron Cresswell may get a chance to start on the left side instead of Emerson.
German striker Niclas Fullkrug missed the weekend's game and is doubtful to be fit enough for the trip to Anfield.

Our Liverpool vs West Ham Prediction
Our prediction for the Liverpool vs. West Ham Carabao Cup Third round tie is: Liverpool to win and Both Teams to Score.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot will likely make wholesale changes for this game, while West Ham should be close to full-strength. That gives the Hammers a good chance of scoring a goal, in a fixture that historically sees both teams find the net. However, even with a much-changed Liverpool side, it is hard to see the visiting side getting anything from this game and the data strongly suggests a comfortable Liverpool win.
Liverpool vs West Ham - Other Interesting Predictions
Federico Chiesa (Liverpool) to score at any time.
