In a repeat of last year’s final, sixth seed Linda Noskova will take on the qualifier Lulu Sun in the first round in Monterrey. This is their fourth career meeting and the second this season. Read on for our prediction of this match.
Linda Noskova doesn’t have the head-to-head advantage in this fixture, but what she has, though, is the biggest victory. The Czech player secured her only victory over Lulu in the final here last season. She won in straight sets to claim her first and only tour title.
As she returns to defend her title, she will hope for the same spark to halt her current slump. The 20-year-old, who is ranked 23rd in the world, has lost three consecutive fixtures, with the most recent being in Cincinnati.
Lulu Sun avenged her loss to Noskova in their subsequent meeting. This was back in March in the second round at Indian Wells. This will have been a sweet feeling, but overcoming the defending champion here should be a much sweeter outcome.
Sun was making her tour final debut when she lost to Noskova last season. She hasn’t been to such heights since. On her return to Nuevo Leon, the Australian started her campaign in the qualifying rounds.
She won both of her duels against Lea Ma and Diane Parry in straight sets. Sun, who has compiled a lacklustre 16-21 record, has dropped 12 places in the live ranking and out of the WTA top 100.
