Tien’s opening two wins in Munich signaled a shift in his troubled start to the campaign. But it didn’t last, as he would soon return to his losing ways.

Three straight defeats ahead of this match mean he has recorded seven losses in the last nine matches. The latest of them was in three sets, as he suffered an early elimination at the hands of Elias Gastao in the first round.

While Tien plays his first match at Rome, Opelka will be looking to better his best here – a semi-final appearance. The American is on a much stronger footing heading into this game.

This season, out of the eight ATP tour events he participated in, he failed to advance past the first round just twice. He has a 5-3 run in his three appearances here, and all his five wins in Rome came via straight sets.

This is the run he will be relying on to improve on a third-round exit at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger. He retired from his match against Igacio Buse when leading 3-2 in the second set.
