Sixteenth seed Karen Khachanov and the unseeded Max Purcell will battle in the first round at the Paris Masters on Monday. The winner will then set up a second-round showdown with either Laslo Djere or Luca Van Assche. Karen Khachanov is coming off a quarterfinal finish in Vienna. He lost in three sets to compatriot and eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev. The Russian has had a decent campaign though much of it has been disrupted by injury. He has compiled a 30-16 record and is currently ranked 15th in the live ranking. Khachanov, who defeated Purcell in their only other previous encounter two seasons ago, is a former Paris finalist.
Max Purcell is in woeful form at the moment and arrives here having lost his last four matches. The Australian has in fact only won two of his last 10 matches. He was defeated in straight sets by Taylor Fritz in his last outing which was in the first round in Basel. Purcell, who has competed mostly outside the tour, has compiled an amazing 51-26 record and has won three challenger titles. The 25-year-old, who is ranked 45th in the live ranking, is making his debut in Paris.
