Fourth seed Elena Rybakina will play 12th seed Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals of this year’s French Open. The winner of this fourth encounter between the two will face Mirra Andreeva or Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the final. Jasmine Paolini is having the best Grand Slam campaign of her career. Before arriving in Paris for her sixth main draw appearance, the Italian had never progressed past the fourth round at a major. In fact, she had only once made it into the second week of competition and this was in Melbourne earlier this year. To advance to this round, Paolini, who is now up to 13th in the live ranking, defeated unseeded Elina Avanesyan. She won their fourth-round duel in three sets and in the process improved her record to 20-10. Paolini defeated Rybakina by way of retirement in Cincinnati last year. This season is proving to be the 28-year-old’s best at tour level as she also won the title in Dubai for her first WTA 1000 crown.
Elena Rybakina has equalled her best-ever finish at Roland Garros. The Kazakh was a quarter-finalist in 2021 and with a head-to-head advantage over Paolini, she will be confident of a semi-final berth. Rybakina has defeated Paolini twice in their three encounters and both wins have been registered on clay. Her most recent success in this fixture was just six weeks ago in Stuttgart. She won in three sets in the quarter-finals on her way to lifting the title. Rybakina also went on to be crowned champion the first time she squared off with Paolini on clay. This was last year in Rome. This upcoming clash could have been the third meeting between Paolini and Rybakina this season. They were scheduled to play each other in Dubai before Rybakina withdrew injured. The current world number four is having an impeccable season. She has compiled a 34-5 record and has lost only once in 13 outings on clay. Rybakina, who is yet to lose a set in Paris, defeated Elina Svitolina by the loss of seven games in the last round.
