For Senegal, it is just their second appearance at the World Cup, as they return for the first time since their debut in Japan/Korea 2002. They are the only African team to have picked a win at the tournament. Japan have been at the World Cup much longer; they made their debut in 1998 and have been in all the subsequent tournaments. Senegal on the other hand, buoyed by the fearless output against Poland, will be hoping to extend their winning run to three matches. They have managed two wins, a loss and two draws, scoring five and conceding three goals in the process. Senegal have five clean sheets in the last 10 matches and have scored in eight of the last 10 matches. This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides but Japan lost to West African side, Ghana, 2 – 0 in the build up to the World Cup while Senegal trounced South Korea by the same margin in their friendly match ahead of the tournament.
