Fifth seed Jan-Lennard Struff will take on wildcard Leandro Riedi in the second round of this year’s Swiss Open. The winner of this match will play Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Dominic Stricker or Botic van de Zandschulp next. Here we have an analysis of the match and offer a prediction.

Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas, a former Gstaad champion, in straight sets in the first round. Their sixth career meeting saw both sets require a tiebreaker to reveal the winner. The win improved Struff’s record to 23-13 and kept his hopes of another tour title this year alive.

Struff, an exceptional clay player, won his maiden tour title in April when he triumphed at the Bavarian Championships. The current world number 37 has registered 12 of his 23 wins this year on clay.

This will be the second meeting between these two players. Leandro Riedi, the Swiss number two won the only other time that he was up against Struff. That was at challenger level in Canberra last year where he prevailed in three sets in the semi-finals.

Riedi isn’t a dominant clay or tour player but as he has the head-to-head advantage over Struff, he will fancy his chances. Playing in front of a charged home crowd should also work in his favor. The Swiss, who is playing in Gstaad for a second time, defeated Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in straight sets in the first round.

His 30th win of the season was also his first in the main draw at tour level this year. This saw him move up to 119th in the live rankings which is a new career high placing.
