The 2025 Rome Masters will be the final one for Fabio Fognini, the former world number nine, has announced. He will, however, hope it doesn’t end with a first-round loss to debutant Jacob Fearnley. The two face off for the first time ever, and below is our prediction of the match. 

Fernley steps out for the first time ever at the Rome Masters. He has the chance to make this his opponent’s last match at the event. 

The Brit arrives here having won four of his last five matches. His latest outing was a third round match against Grigor Dimitrov in Madrid, which he lost 2-0. He has only lost four of his last 13 matches.

Fognini will be playing his 38th match at the Rome Masters and carries into this one a 19-18 record at the tournament. When he made his debut here in 2006, he lost in the first round.

There are indications he may also finish his lengthy dalliance with this tournament with a first-round defeat. This and the second round are the Italian’s most troubled rounds, having lost six times in each.

His best was in 2018, when he made the quarter-finals. Fognini suffered first-round exits in his last two events – the Mauthausen Challenger and Madrid Masters. At ATP tournament main draws, he has three straight defeats.
