Ivory Coast begin their bid to win the African Cup of Nations for the third time in their history. Their last victory was in 2015 but their defence of that title wasn't a great one as they failed to get out of their group in 2017. They finished runners-up in Group H to qualify for this tournament ending up a point behind Guinea but five points clear of the Central African Republic. Their form coming into this tournament is good with four wins in the last five games and only a defeat by Uganda in their last 12 games. Wilfried Bony is in good form too with three goals so far in the month of June.
South Africa are only ten places below Ivory Coast in the latest world rankings (72 v 62). They missed out on the last African Cup of Nations but reached the last eight in 2015. Qualification for this year came by finishing second in Group E a point behind Nigeria. They were unbeaten in that group, winning three and drawing three and only conceding two goals. South Africa are the draw experts with seven of their last eight games going that way. Scoring is a problem though with no goals in their last two games against Malawi and Ghana. The tip here is for under 2.5 goals to be scored.

This should be a tight opening game for these two countries. The other two sides in the group are Morocco and Namibia so it's not going to be the easiest of groups. South Africa draw far too many games and have failed to score in their last two. Ivory Coast are in decent form but this will be a tougher game for them. Go for under 2.5 goals to be scored.
