Independiente del Valle will host Ecuadorian rivals Mushuc Runa in the first leg of the two teams’ Copa Sudamericana round of 16 tie. This is the first nondomestic meeting between these two teams. Read on for our prediction of this match.

Independiente haven’t lost in three meetings with Mushuc. They have won three times in this stretch, most recently in May in the Ecuadorian LigaPro. Javier Rabanal’s men are having a strong season.

They sit top of the domestic league and, aside from the Sudamericana, are also fighting it out in the Copa Ecuador. Los Negriazules, who’ve won CONMEBOL’s second-tier club competition twice, drew 0-0 with Manta over the weekend to stretch to 16 games unbeaten.

Mushuc topped their group to qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time. Fabian Frias’s men ended the group campaign with 16 points, winning five of six games.

No other team won as many or finished with as many points. They will hope to maintain this momentum and offset their domestic struggles. El Ponchito are in danger of relegation in the LigaPro as they sit rock bottom after 24 games.

Mushuc haven’t won in 13 consecutive outings and are currently on a five-match losing streak. They were defeated 2-1 at home by Libertad last time out.
