Hungary have the opportunity to offer an unexpected twist at Euro 2020, having landed in the Group of Death. They are drawn in Group F alongside the current world champions, the immediate former world champions and the current European champions. Their journey at this competition starts with a game against the current European champions, Portugal. Hungary managed to get out of their group at Euro 2016 though they were hammered 4-0 by Belgium in the second round. In qualification for this tournament, they went the playoffs route after finishing fourth in their group, but ahead of this game, they’ve had quite a remarkable run, by their standards. They are on 11 matches unbeaten, with seven wins therein. They drew 3-3 with Poland in the World Cup qualifiers in March, in what will pass as their toughest game in recent times, while they’ve had three clean sheets in the last four matches. In their warm up games, they beat Cyprus 1-0 before drawing 0-0 with Ireland but they know it will be tough against Portugal though playing at home, they’ll have the 12th man advantage. Hungary met Portugal in the 2016 Euro finals and the game ended 3-3. That was the first time in eight meetings with Portugal that they avoided defeat.

Portugal start their title defence against a team they’ve beaten in seven of their eight meetings in history. With tougher matches ahead, a good start is critical, and they will be targeting three points before planning for France and Germany. In Euro 2016, Portugal had to come from behind thrice, to draw with Hungary, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a brace. That was just one of the six times Portugal have scored three goals in a game against Hungary and coming from a 4-0 win over Israel in their final warm up game, they will be confident of another comfortable outing. They’ve scored two or more goals in three of their last four matches and have three clean sheets in the last five while they have a six-game unbeaten run. In their last 10 matches they have six clean sheets and failed to score in just three.
