The penultimate week in the group stage of the 2024 Currie Cup will get underway with the Guiquas playing host to the Free State Cheetahs on Friday afternoon. The hosts are seventh in the standings, while the visitors are fourth. Here’s our match prediction. 

While mathematically the Griquas can still make it to the knockouts, it would take a catastrophic turn of events for that to happen. The more likely outcome is that they will play out the final two games as a formality. 

Following last week’s 47-24 defeat to the Blue Bulls, the Peacock Blues have 14 points after eight games, courtesy of two wins, the first against the Sharks and the second against minnows the Griffons. 

Griquas pulled off an unexpected 29-29 draw when they met last season but will need a massive improvement on their recent performances to stand a chance in this one. 

Meanwhile, the Free State Cheetahs were battling for top spot at this stage last season, but it’s a much different situation this time around, as they currently sit just inside the playoff cutoff. 

However, they are far from comfortable with fifth place Pumas level with them on 24 points after eight games with an identical record of four wins, three losses and a draw. 

This is not just a must-win for the defending champions, it’s also a match they must pick up a bonus point in before the blockbuster showdown against the Pumas next week.
