The Round of 16 in the Copa Libertadores will get underway with Gremio playing host to Fluminense on Tuesday night. The winner of this two-legged tie will move on to face either San Lorenzo or Atletico Mineiro in the quarter-final. Check out our match prediction below.
After a sensational 2023 in which they finished second in Brasileiro, Gremio’s progress was halted at the start of this season when the torrential floods rendered their stadium unplayable.
The disruption saw them drop into the relegation zone after the league season resumed but they have begun to refind their form in recent weeks. Following a 3-1 away win over Cuiaba last weekend, Tricolor are now up to 13th place in the league standings and are unbeaten in their last five top-flight matches.
Gremio finished second in their Copa Libertadores group with 10 points in six matches, including a record of three wins, one draw and two losses. They have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three home games in this competition.
Meanwhile, Fluminese have experienced a major fall from grace domestically this season, as they are currently below the dotted line with just 20 points from 21 league matches to date.
In contrast, their cup record has been impeccable, as they came through the group stage of this competition unbeaten with 14 points, including four wins and two draws in their six matches.
However, O Flu are now set to face an opponent that they have lost to in each of their last six encounters, with the most recent ending in a 1-0 defeat at the end of June.
