The Golden Lions will aim to sure up the top spot in the Currie Cup group stage on Friday when they play host to the Griffons at Ellis Park Stadium. The Lions currently lead the group standings while the Griffons are bottom of the table. Here’s our match prediction. 

It has been an excellent season for the Golden Lions and their hard work this term paid off last week when they beat the Blue Bulls 57-33 on the road to take the lead in the standings heading into the final round of the season. 

With that victory, Rooibontes moved to 38 points with a record of eight wins and just one loss in nine matches, while also securing a home semi-final, regardless of the outcome this weekend. 

Still, the Lions will know that maintaining momentum ahead of the playoffs, and the upcoming URC will be vital, so expect another big performance from boys from Gauteng in this one. 

Meanwhile, for a second consecutive season, the Griffons will end the term rooted to the bottom of the table, and arguably a little worse off than at this same point in the previous campaign.

Heading into the final round of competition, the Northern Free State side have just three points to their name, all by way of bonus points having lost all nine group-stage matches so far. 

Out of the running for a playoff spot and up against the league leaders, it’s difficult to see the Griffons pulling off a surprise victory in this match.
