Germany are bidding to do what no country since Brazil have achieved and that's win the World Cup at two successive tournaments. They easily won their qualifying group winning all ten of their matches but the last six months have seen them struggling for form. They beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 in their final warm-up game but their previous five games had seen them draw three and lose to Brazil and Austria.  Their winner against Saudi Arabia was via an own goal so they definitely haven't been firing on all cylinders of late. The goals scored in their four friendlies this year have all been scored by different players They have an experienced squad though and surely they will do the usual German trick and suddenly find form in a major tournament. They have won their last six games against Mexico and another win looks the most likely result here.

Mexico won their group by five points and their only defeat was by Honduras. They have qualified for each of the last seven tournaments and have made it out of their group on each occasion but then lost  in the first knock-out round. Their last quarter final appearance was when they hosted the tournament in 1986. 11 players scored for them in their qualifying group and top scorer Hirving Lozano only netted three times. Recent form has seen Mexico win just one out of four games with the only goal scored coming in a 1-0 home win over Scotland. Their final warm-up game saw them lose 2-0 to Denmark. They do have an experienced squad with 14 players who have at least 50 international caps but also have nine who are in their thirties. Germany can get the win in this game to get their defence off to a strong start.
