Fulham vs Liverpool Prediction & Betting Tips - Carabao Cup

by Ian John | in Carabao Cup Prediction

Wednesday evening sees Fulham take on Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup Semi Final. Liverpool hold a narrow 2-1 lead from the first leg at Anfield, coming back from a goal down to clinch the win. Fulham will be hoping to turn things around in front of their home fans for a first Carabao Cup semi-final win and their first final. However, they face the current Premier League leaders who head into the game on the back of a thumping 4-0 win away to Bournemouth at the weekend.

Fulham - Liverpool: Form Analysis

Fulham have had plenty of time to prepare for this second leg, having last played on 13th January, losing 1-0 away to Chelsea. The Cottagers will be hopeful of surprising many viewers by winning the game, but they have to overturn recent form, which has seen them lose four of their last five games, as well as historic form which has seen them not beat Liverpool at home since 2011 A 2-1 home win over Arsenal on New Year's Eve will give the home fans hope that Fulham can secure a win. Marco Silva is expected to play his usual 4-2-3-1 formation, with the impressive Joao Palhinha operating in a deeper midfield role.

Liverpool will be confident of getting the result they need to reach the final after a 4-0 away win over Bournemouth on Sunday. A goalless first half gave way to a much improved second half performance with two goals apiece for Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota handing the Reds the win they needed to move five points clear at the top of the table. Their attentions now turn to the Carabao Cup where they will progress if they avoid defeat. Jurgen Klopp will likely stick to his 4-3-3 formation, with Joe Gomez playing at left back to accommodate youngster Conor Bradley in his preferred right back slot. Caoimhin Kelleher will start in goal, having been promised first team action in the Carabao Cup, while Alisson is rested.

Fulham & Liverpool Squad Analysis

Fulham will definitely be without three players for the second leg as Calvin Bassey, Fode Ballo-Toure and Alex Iwobi are all away on international duty for their countries at the African Cup of Nations. Adama Traore, who has made only four starts since his move from Wolves in the summer, is close to a return to fitness, but is still not certain to feature as he continues to make his recovery from a hamstring injury. Other than that Marco Silva has a fully fit squad to select from including Joao Palhinha, the outstanding Portuguese midfielder whose impressive performances have drawn the attention of teams such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester United. Willian, who also scored in the first leg at Anfield, is another whose performance will be key to Fulham's chances of victory.

Jurgen Klopp has had mixed news on the injury front. Long-term absentees Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago remain out, but full backs Konstantinos Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold should be fit to return at the end of January/early February. Dominik Szoboszlai and Andy Robertson may well be in contention to play some role against Fulham after recovering from injuries, but Wataru Endo remains on international duty at the Asian Cup and Curtis Jones is in doubt after being taken off as a precaution in the weekend win over Bournemouth. Mo Salah has returned to England from the African Cup of Nations after sustaining a thigh injury in Egypt's draw with Ghana. The injury is not thought to be too serious but Salah is still expected to be out for a month. However, with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez in good goalscoring form at the weekend, the Reds may not miss their Egyptian superstar quite as much as first feared.

What will be interesting will be to see how Liverpool cope with Caoiminh Kelleher in goal. The Irishman has featured in all Carabao Cup games for the Reds in recent years, barring injury, but conceded three against Fulham in the league (in a 4-3 Liverpool win at Anfield) and one against them in the first leg of the semi final. The Reds defence has hardly been watertight this season, although it has improved of late. The first goal in this game could be crucial but with Jota and Nunez both scoring braces at the weekend, if Liverpool can get it, that will take the pressure off their stand-in 'keeper.

Fulham - Liverpool Key Points

  1. Fulham's last home win over Liverpool was a 1-0 win back in December 2011 in the Premier League. Losing 3 and drawing 2 games since then.
  2. Diogo Jota's last three goals for Liverpool have all come away from Anfield, two at Bournemouth, one at Burnley.
  3. Three of the last four games between the two have seen over 2.5 goals scored.
  4. Both teams have scored in 5 of the last 7 games between the two teams. Both teams have also scored in 7 of the last 8 games between the two when Fulham were the home side.
  5. Diogo Jota has yet to register a goal against Fulham in six games against them, three for Wolves and three for Liverpool. He did score a brace at the weekend against Bournemouth and has 11 goals in all competitions for Liverpool in just 22 games.

Our Fulham vs Liverpool Prediction

Fulham v Liverpool has produced some great games in the past, and Fulham fans will be hoping for some of that magic to appear here. However, in terms of form, history and the strength in depth of each squad, it is hard to back them to win here. Liverpool have been hit hard by injuries, but such is their depth of squad they should be ok here. I do think there will be goals, hence our prediction for Fulham v Liverpool is Diogo Jota to score at any time in the game.

Fulham vs Liverpool - Other Interesting Predictions

Both Teams to Score - Yes

The first leg saw both teams score at Anfield and the fact that Fulham need to score to have any chance in this game should make this an open game. Liverpool are such a threat on the counter though that I would expect the visitors to score at least once and as such, backing both teams to score is a sensitive bet here.

Correct Score - Fulham 1-2 Liverpool

Historically, both these teams find the net in games between them at Craven Cottage and I can see no reason why that isn't the case here. Liverpool don't need to win the game, and I can see this being a closely contested battle until Fulham get desperate late on. So I feel Liverpool will catch them late on in the game on the counter attack to clinch a 2-1 win.
