Linda Fruhvirtova and Claire Liu, both unseeded, will battle in the opening round of the Thailand Open. The winner of this first-ever encounter between the two will next play either Zhu Lin or Taylah Preston. Linda Fruvirtova is having a poor start to the season which seems to be a continuation of her struggles from last year. The Czech has won only one of her five contests so far this year. Both victories came in the qualifying rounds in Adelaide. Liu, who is also coming off a first-round exit at the Australian Open, is making her Hua Hin debut. She will be hoping playing at a tournament for the first time will inspire a season turnaround. The American, former world number 52, is up one place to 108th in the live ranking. Liu is a strong performer on hard courts and has so far in her career won 118 matches on the surface.
