Two heavyweights are set to face off as France tackles Germany in Group F of Euro 2020 on Tuesday. France, the current world champions are looking to add the European title to their order of honors and start off with the team they replaced as World Cup winners. This pool has been termed the Group of Death, and rightly so, with the current European champs, Portugal also in the pool, along with Hungary, another exciting team. France had good preparations for this tournament, registering 3-0 wins over Wales and Bulgaria in the warm ups. In those two games, France flaunted their rich pool of talent and three of their forwards managed to get on the score sheet – Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud. Meanwhile, Karim Benzema is back in the team and looked good in the warmups, though he missed a penalty against Wales. The quality in the French team is great on both ends; they’ve kept four straight clean sheets going to this game, while they’ve scored in each of their last seven matches. They are unbeaten in seven matches, winning six of them and have just one loss in their last 20 matches. The last time these two giants faced off was in the Nations League in 2018, and France registered a 2-1 win, making it five unbeaten outings against Germany.

Germany have suffered three losses at the hands of France in the last five meetings. The last time they beat France was at the 2014 World Cup and they will be hoping to bring back that winning feeling as they look to restore their lost shine. In the 2018 World Cup, Germany suffered an early exit and will hope to make things right here. Playing their matches on home soil is perhaps the best motivation they’ll have, since they don’t have a run as strong as France’s. They wrapped up their warm up matches with a 7-1 win over Latvia but the level of difficulty will be higher against France, and one area they’ll need to be keen on is defence, having conceded in each of their last three matches. A recent home loss to North Macedonia and a 6-0 defeat to Spain remain major stains on the Germans’ badge and an opening win over France will go a long way in restoring confidence. In their last 10 matches at home, Germany have managed just two clean sheets, against lower ranked Iceland and Czech Republic. On a positive note though, in those 10 matches, they’ve lost just once – to North Macedonia.
