France and Colombia will kick off their 2024 Paris Olympics soccer campaign when they meet at the Groupama Stadium on Thursday evening. These two have been drawn into Group A, which also features Canada and New Zealand, and the top two teams at the end of the group stage will move on the the quarter-final matches. Let’s get into the match prediction.
Les Bleus shockingly failed to qualify for the last Olympic Games in Tokyo but earned automatic entry to this year’s competition as the host nation. They enter the competition ranked second in the world behind Spain.
Last week France secured their participation in Euro 2025 by topping their qualification group, edging out the likes of England and Sweden. Before that, they reached the final of the Nations League but were beaten by the current world champions Spain 2-0.
France have won seven and lost three of their last 10 matches in all competitions and scored in all but one of those games. They have also won three and lost only once in four previous matches against this opponent, which includes a 4-0 victory at the 2016 Games in Rio.
Meanwhile, despite ranking six places above New Zealand according to FIFA, Colombia are the current underdogs to qualify from Group A for the quarter-final. They qualified for the Olympics after reaching the 2022 Copa America final where they lost 2-0 to Brazil.
Since then, they made it to the CONCACAF W Gold Cup quarter-final but were beaten by tournament winners USA and won four of their five Olympic warm-up matches since April this year.
Over their last 10 games, Las Chicas Superpoderosas also have a record of seven wins and three losses and scored in eight of those matches. The only time Colombia have beaten this opponent was in 2015 at the FIFA World Cup.
