Finland are appearing in a major tournament for the first time in their history and already look like favorites to advance from Group B, as they prepare to take on Russia in the second round of matches. On Match Day 1, Finland saw off a star-studded Denmark 1-0 at the Danes’ backyard, while Russia suffered a 3-0 loss on home soil, at the hands of Belgium. Finland’s win was only soured by worrying events regarding Denmark’s Christian Eriksen but after registering a 1-0 victory, they’ll be looking to push on and make their first appearance at this stage memorable. Joel Pohjanpalo scored Finland’s all-important goal and they’ll be hoping to disappoint another side playing at home. With a game against Belgium ahead, they’ll want to chart their own destiny from this game. Finland have one win in their last seven matches and their win over Denmark presented their only clean sheet in the last eight matches. In the last four matches, they’ve lost three – all friendly matches, but in competitive action Finland have one loss only and four wins in seven.

For Russia, not even playing at home would favor them against Belgium. They had a very poor defensive show and were completely outplayed in the 3-0 loss. It was the first time in six matches that they failed to score, while they have just one clean sheet in the last eight matches. The look and feel in this group must have pointed to Belgium as the toughest opponent for Russia and having done with that game, they will look at this and Denmark as winnable clashes. It won’t be easy though with Finland feeling the possibility of advancing after a mix of grit and fortune in their opening game. Three of Russia’s last five matches have seen over 2.5 goals scored with Russia failing to score in just one, while they have just two wins in eight competitive matches.
