The penultimate match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will see Egypt facing off against Nigeria in the third-place Playoff at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Saturday evening. The Pharaohs and the Super Eagles were ousted from the competition in the semis, with Morocco and Senegal progressing to the final. Check out our match prediction below!

Egypt’s hopes of claiming a record-extending eighth AFCON title came to an end in midweek when they were beaten by the Lions of Teranga, with Sadio Mane scoring the only goal of the match in the 78th minute. That was the first time the Pharaohs lost an AFCON game in open-play since the 2021 campaign.

For Nigeria, going down to Morocco on penalties was certainly no disgrace on their part, but no less disappointing either, having lost the final of this competition in 2023 (2024) and failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This, then, is a chance to salvage pride before the plane home for both these sides - let’s get into the key stats!

Egypt - Nigeria: Form Analysis

Egypt have never reached an Africa Cup of Nations final in North Africa when they were not the tournament hosts, and that record was extended in midweek when they lost to Senegal 1-0.

Prior to that, the Pharaohs had maintained an unbeaten record in the competition, picking up two wins and a draw in the group stage. They then defeated Burkina Faso 3-0 in the last 16 before ending the Ivory Coast’s reign in the quarter-final.

The North African giants have conceded five goals in this competition, the most of any of the semi-finalists, while having scored nine times, which was the joint-fewest of the final four teams.

Egypt beat Nigeria 2-1 in an AFCON 2025 warm-up match last month!

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s hopes of claiming a fourth continental crown ended in a penalty shootout against Morocco on Wednesday, marking the fifth time they have lost to tournament hosts at the AFCON.

The Super Eagles were the only team to enter the semis with a perfect record, winning all three of their group-stage games before eliminating Mozambique 4-0 and Algeria 2-0 in the knockout rounds.

The West African powerhouse are still the leading scorers in the competition with 14 goals and have now kept clean sheets in each of their last three games. Their last victory against this opponent came in the group stage of AFCON 2021 (2022).

Egypt & Nigeria Squad Analysis

After scoring four goals leading up to the semis, Mohamed Salah was completely nullified by Senegal’s defence, as he failed to register a single touch inside the opposition's penalty area.

Egypt confirmed that both Salah and Omar Marmoush will remain with the squad until the end of this competition, meaning they will miss their Premier League games against Burnley and Man United, respectively.

Trezeguet overcame a knock to feature for the second half against the Teranga Lions, but Mohamed Hamdi was not passed fit and is unlikely to feature for the team this weekend.

Will Victor Osimhen feature for the Super Eagles in this match?

Osimhen was surprisingly withdrawn before the Super Eagles' penalty shootout against Morocco. Eric Chelle revealed that the striker had sustained a knock to his ankle, and it remains to be seen if he will be risked ahead of the resumption of his Champions League campaign with Galatasaray.

Fulham midfielder Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi of Greek champions Olympiacos missed their spot kicks in the shootout and will be hoping to be given a chance to make amends in this match.

Wilfred Ndidi will be able to return here after serving a suspension in the last match, but Calvin Bassey will be forced to sit out, having received his second yellow in the knockout stage against the Atlas Lions.

Our Egypt vs Nigeria Prediction

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Nigeria in the semi-final on Wednesday night when their hopes of a fourth AFCON title were ended despite having scored the most goals and not lost a single game in open play in this competition.

While Egypt were among the favourites for the title this year, they were the least convincing of the final four over the course of the competition and were completely outplayed by Senegal. Therefore, we feel that the Super Eagles will leave Morocco with the bronze medal for their efforts. Our Egypt vs Nigeria prediction is Nigeria to finish third.
