The most successful African team, Egypt, has gone through some low moments in recent times. They will start their quest for another African title when they play host to Guinea in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in Group D. four of their last five matches have had to go all the way to extra time or penalties, and Egypt have lost the most crucial of them. In their last game, a loss to Senegal on post-match penalties ensured they miss a spot at the 2022 World Cup. That defeat came a month after the same opponents had beaten them on penalties again to win the AFCON title. This is now a moment for redemption for Egypt, who have failed to score in three of their last five matches. The only time Egypt scored more than a goal in the last 11 games, was against Morocco, a 2-1 win that had the nations stuck at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Guinea head into this game on a poor run; they are winless in their last four matches and their scoring run hasn’t been great either. In the last 13 matches, Guinea have managed just two wins and their recent matches have been low-scoring, five of the last six producing under 2.5 goals. Three times in the last four matches, Guinea have failed to score, but they have only conceded more than a goal in one of their last six matches. Away from home, the AFCON qualifiers haven’t been the greatest hunting ground for Guinea; they haven’t won any of the last five. They have just one clean sheet in 10 away matches in AFCON qualification and three of the last five have produced under 2.5 goals.
