Elise Mertens made the semi-finals here in 2023, the year in which Vekic was crowned champion. It was her debut tournament and is now back for a second stab.
The Belgian eliminated Anna Blinkova, also in straight sets, in the first round. Mertens is having a strong campaign and, with a 31-15 record, has already won two titles.
