River Plate won the Copa Libertafores last year but aren't having it all their own way in this 2019 Last sixteen tie. They qualified for the knock-out stages by finishing second in Group A four points adrift of Brazilian club Internacional. They didn't lose a game in their group but drew four of the six matches without winning away from home. That saw them seeded tenth in the knock-out stages and in this tie with Cruzeiro. The Brazilians were impressive in their group earning 15 points from their six matches with their only loss being at home to Emelec. No goals were conceded in their three away games and they kept that up with a goalless draw in the first leg of this tie. River Plate are 10th in the Argentinian League but only played one game, which ended in a draw. Four of their last five games have had under 2.5 goals scored in them.

Cruzerio's form in this competition is a lot better than their results in Serie A where they are 16th in the table.
