For the second time in this Copa America competition, Peru and Colombia will be facing off. The two play for third place at the tournament after losing their semi final clashes and from their performances in the semis, this promises to be a befitting curtain-raiser for the final. Peru suffered a 1-0 loss to hosts Brazil while Colombia were losers on post match penalties to Argentina after a 1-1 draw. These two nations faced off in Group B of the tournament with Peru winning 2-1 and going on to finish second with seven points. Peru have had a much better competition than Colombia and will have the favorites’ feel going into this game. Their loss to Brazil in the semis was the second in this competition and it is in the two matches against Brazil that they’ve failed to score in this competition. They have two outright wins and one on post match penalties and in three of their last five, they’ve scored two or more goals. They will have an edge with the return of Andre Carrillo, who was suspended for the Brazil game. Defensively, they’ve struggled a bit, with just one clean sheet in six matches at the competition.
Colombia do not have a very strong run at this competition; they have just one outright win in the six matches played – the 1-0 opening victory over Ecuador. In the last five matches, their only win was on post match penalties over Uruguay in the quarters. In the semis, they did well to come from down and level against Argentina but in the post match penalties they missed three. Yerry Mina, the villain in the loss to Peru at the group stages, with an own goal, was among the players who missed their spot kicks and he will hope for some redemption here.
