Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction & Betting Tips - Carabao Cup

by Ian John | in Carabao Cup Prediction

Sunday afternoon at 3pm sees Chelsea face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final. It will be the second League Cup Final between the two teams in the past three years and the third domestic final in that period. Liverpool won both previous encounters in these finals on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The Reds currently top the Premier League and beat Chelsea 4-1 recently at Anfield, but injuries have hit Jurgen Klopp's squad hard in recent matches. Chelsea have been hot and cold this season but as they showed in drawing away from home at Man City last weekend, the Blues can up their game against anybody on their day.

Chelsea - Liverpool: Form Analysis

Chelsea come into this game on the back of three games unbeaten, including creditable wins at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, plus a battling 1-1 draw at Manchester City last weekend. Prior to those three games, the Londoners had suffered two heavy defeats, losing 4-2 at home to Wolves and prior to that they were soundly beaten 4-1 by today's opponents Liverpool at Anfield. Overall, Chelsea's results have been trending more positively over the last couple of months or so, especially in the cup competitions. Mauricio Pochettino will want to tighten things up defensively. The Londoners have shipped 11 goals in their last five games, scoring 10 in reply.

Liverpool come into this game with a chance still of winning four trophies in what will be Jurgen Klopp's final year with the club. The Reds, like Chelsea, remain in the FA Cup, where they face a 5th Round tie with Southampton next week, they are also in the Round of 16 in the Europa League and are of course top of the Premier League, as well as contesting Sunday's final. Despite the lengthy injury list, Liverpool have kept winning despite several players being injured or missing time over the last few weeks. Much will depend on whether Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez are fit as to the team that Klopp will select but with just one defeat in their last 10 Premier League games, whoever the Reds pick should be confident that they can get the job done against a team they beat 4-1 just a few weeks ago.

Chelsea & Liverpool Squad Analysis

Chelsea will be hoping that Thiago Silva can make a return from an injury that saw him miss the draw with Manchester City last week. The experienced Brazilian centre back is back in training and manager Mauricio Pochettino said that he had "a chance" of being fit for the final. Marc Cucurella is also back in training after missing a lengthy spell out, but he is unlikely to be risked from the start. The Londoners will be without several long-term injury absentees though in Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Carney Chukwumeka, Benoit Badiashile, Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu. Robert Sanchez is back in training but it is expected Pochettino will keep faith with young keeper Petrovic for the final after he deputised well for the ex-Brighton man. Cole Palmer will be fit and likely to start with the ex-Manchester City man being Chelsea's best player this season, while Raheem Sterling will be hoping to keep his place in the team to face one of his former teams.

Liverpool's injury list for the final is a lengthy one and it is one that will make manager Jurgen Klopp more than a little concerned as the Reds chase trophies on four fronts over the coming months. Long term absentees definitely out include Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak and Thiago, while they have been joined on the sidelines and unable to start at the weekend by Diogo Jota, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones. Midfielder Dominiki Szoboszlai is rated touch and go to be fit for the game. Liverpool are hopeful that the injuries sustained by Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez, who both missed the midweek 4-1 home win over Luton, won't be enough to rule them out of the final. Salah in particular would be a big miss for the Reds given his excellent form once again this season both as a scorer and as an assist-maker.

Chelsea - Liverpool Key Points

  1. In the two Premier League games between the two this season, the teams drew 1-1 on the opening day of the season, Axel Disasi's goal cancelling out Luis Diaz early strike for Liverpool. At Anfield, Liverpool ran out comfortable 4-1 winners a few weeks back, Jota, Bradley, Szoboszlai and Diaz scoring, with Nkunku getting Chelsea's lone reply.
  2. Six of the last seven games between the teams have finished as draws (if you include Liverpool's wins on penalties in the 2022 League Cup and FA Cup Finals). Four of those games have finished goalless.
  3. Over their last ten games in all competitions, Chelsea have won five, drawn two and lost three. Liverpool have won eight, drawn one and lost once in that period.
  4. All of Liverpool's last seven games have seen both teams score at least one goal. Seven of their last eight have seen over 2.5 goals scored. Both teams have scored in all of Chelsea's last five games too.
  5. Chelsea have won one of the last 11 games between the two teams. Liverpool have won five and there have been five draws.

Our Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction

The form book suggests the Chelsea v Liverpool Carabao Cup Final should go the way of the Reds, but with Jurgen Klopp having several key players out injured, Chelsea may have a much better chance than many expect. This fixture has a long history of tight and close games, with many draws in recent times and I can't see Sunday being any different. Recent finals between these two teams have finished all square with Liverpool winning on penalties. So our first Chelsea v Liverpool prediction is for the full time result to be a draw.

Team to Score First - No Goals

Given that the last game at Anfield apart, the previous seven games were all draws, or had to be decided by penalties, and that four of those games ended 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes (and in two cases, including extra time too), it makes sense to consider the No Goals option here in the Team to Score First market, especially at the generous odds available for this bet.

2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer

bet365 2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer

One of the worst feelings when placing a football bet is when the team that you have backed has gone into a multiple-goal lead only to be clawed back to a draw or to lose the game in question. This is something that bet365 has rectified for their bettors courtesy of this offer. If the team that you backed takes a two-goal lead your bet will be paid out as a winner. That is any two-goal lead so 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 etc will all be paid out early as a winner if your team is in that position. This is available in 80 different competitions including the major leagues across Europe and can be played on the full-time result market. Singles and multiples are both valid for this offer but you cannot bet on enhanced price markets. As with most promotions, if you cash out a bet in full, the bet will no longer be available for the offer in question. It also cannot be used if you bet on the draw on a game.
