The Copa del Rey is back! Third-tier Intercity will resume their cup campaign by playing host to Spanish giants Barcelona at Estadio Jose Rico Perez on Wednesday night, with both sides hoping to book their place in the round of 16. Barcelona is the most successful team in the history of the Copa del Rey, winning the illustrious cup 31 times since it came into existence. Their form ahead of the World Cup break was excellent, winning four on the bounce, including a 4-2 away win to Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League; however, it wasn’t enough to see them qualify for the knockout rounds. In their first game back, they were only able to manage a draw in the derby match at home to Espanyol. With their focus firmly set on La Liga and Europa League success, Xavi will likely make several changes for this match which should keep Intercity interested; however, it would be the shock of the tournament to date if they were able to come away with the win over the mighty Blaugrana.
Intercity has had to play two more games than the visitors in order to reach this round of the Copa del Rey, which included wins over Cirbonero and second-tier Mirandes. The hosts are currently in 16th place in the Primera Division RFEF - Group 2, with 19 points in their 17 matches so far this term. They will be under no illusion of how big a task this is going to be for them and come into this match as a 21/1 outsider across most bookmaker odds. To add to that, Intercity has not played in a competitive match since the last round of this competition in mid-December, with the Primera Division RFEF - Group 2 only scheduled to restart on the 8th of January. Nevertheless, Intercity has nothing to lose and will throw everything they have at Barcelona, who will not want to be caught out underestimating their lower-ranked opponents.
