Cameroon and DR Congo are set to go head-to-head in a high-stakes match as they battle for a spot at the 2026 World Cup. This is a CAF region mini tournament to produce the team for intercontinental playoffs set for March. These two are part of four teams that were the best second-place finishers during the group stages. Cameroon were edged by World Cup debutants Cape Verde in Group D. Meanwhile, DR Congo were beaten to the top spot in Group B by Senegal. Read on for our preview and a prediction of this match.

It is important to establish how this stage works: the winner here will meet Nigeria or Gabon, the other semi-finalists.

From there, the winner features in the intercontinental playoffs, consisting of a team from Asia, CONCACAF, Oceania, and South America. The African nation will be determined after the final on Sunday, with all three matches staged in Morocco.

Cameroon - DR Congo: Form Analysis

Cameroon holds the record for most World Cup appearances for an African nation at eight. However, they have an uphill task in seeking their next after being outclassed by Cape Verde.

The Indomitable Lions didn’t have a great finish to their Group D assignments, falling four points short of Cape Verde. Their loss to the island nation didn’t help.

Now they have to strategize well and negotiate through a tough run of matches to get that coveted ticket. Cameroon won five of their last 10 matches, and they have four straight wins against DR Congo. In two of the wins, they kept clean sheets.

Cameroon won only two of their last nine matches away from home.

DR Congo’s failure to progress automatically was much more painful than Cameroon’s. They stumbled at home in a match against Senegal, losing a 2-0 lead to fall 3-2. Ugly scenes followed as frustrated fans vented.

DR Congo will only want to win this to soothe the fans, as they are themselves seeking a second World Cup appearance following their 1974 showing.

Their two wins after that home loss to Senegal - a 1-0 away victory over Togo followed by a 1-0 home win over Sudan - have done little to bring back the morale. Perhaps winning the African playoffs will get back the smiles. With seven wins in 10 away matches, confidence levels are surely high.

Cameroon & DR Congo Squad Analysis

The Cameroon squad is dotted with stars from top sides in Europe. Andre Onana, the Manchester United loanee to Trabzonspor, is a major highlight.

The keeper has been doing well at the club level, and here he gets another chance to address his troubles at the national team. The Premier League’s October Player of the Month, Bryan Mbeumo, will get to showcase his skills for his nation again.

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has also earned a call. The Indomitable Lions haven't overlooked experience, with Vincent Aboubakar also named in the team.

Eric Choupo-Moting and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa have been late exclusions from the team with injury after pulling out of training on Tuesday.

In-form Andre Onana is expected to be between the sticks for Cameroon, though he remains an injury concern.

Congo will miss the services of Yoane Wissa once again. The Newcastle United forward is nursing a knee injury, which he sustained during the Senegal loss in September.

However, with Cedric Bakambu fit and running, DR Congo should have their hopes high. He was DR Congo’s leading scorer in the group stage, with four goals. To deal with Cameroon’s attacking threat, Congo have Arthur Masuaku, Chancel Mbemba, Axel Tuanzebe, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in defence.

Cameroon - DR Congo Key Points

  1. Cameroon won just twice in their last nine away games.
  2. DR Congo have four wins in the last five away matches.
  3. DR Congo have posted seven wins in their last 10 matches.
  4. Cameroon posted five wins in their last 10 outings.

Our Cameroon vs DR Congo Prediction

DR Congo may not have as many stars as Cameroon, but they have a team ethic that has lifted them all through. They are still in recovery after the unfortunate outing from home to Senegal. Having posted three wins in their last four matches, DR Congo will walk into this game confidently.

Cameroon have lacked consistency coming into this match, and this could turn costly. They haven't lost a lot against DR Congo before, but here we see that coming. Our main prediction for Cameroon v DR Congo is that DR Congo wins.

Cameroon vs DR Congo - Other Interesting Predictions

Under 2.5 goals

Odds 1.36

This will be a tense affair. No team will want to rush out, lest they be caught napping. Also, these teams have been low scoring of late, and they might carry that aspect into this game.

Cameroon failed to score in two of the last three matches, while four of their last five had under 2.5 goals. DR Congo’s last two matches also produced under 2.5 goals.
