After being postponed twice, the 2021 African Cup of Nations is here and hosts Cameroon will be the ones kicking it off with a big match in Group A against Burkina Faso. Cameroon haven’t played a friendly match ahead of the competition but are coming from a very good run. They secured a place in the final round of qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup and will be out to extend a fine run of four straight wins when they face Burkina Faso. Cameroon have called up top stars including Bayern Munich’s Eric Choupo-Moting, Karl Toko Ekambi of Lyon and Ajax’s Andre Onana. They have three straight clean sheets to start them off in the competition and at home, they have no loss in 15 straight games. Home advantage will be among the factors favoring Cameroon.
Burkina Faso have also been impressive in their recent matches and though they haven’t enjoyed success close to Cameroon’s, they remain a formidable force. Bertrand Traore of Aston Villa will be the key player for them here but their recent development has been based more on teamwork than individual brilliance. Burkina Faso pushed Algeria all the way in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and only narrowly missed a slot in the final round. They go to this game unbeaten in eight matches but they have drawn three of their last four matches. Ahead of this one they thrashed Gabon 3-0 in a pre-tournament friendly match, their second friendly game after drawing 0-0 with Mauritania. The last three meetings with Cameroon in competitive action ended in draws.
