Brighton and Hove Albion welcome a depleted Sunderland side in their next match in the English Premier League. Seeking to end their current slump and return to winning ways, Brighton arrive for this matchday 17 fixture sitting in 10th place. Their visitors have a slightly better placing in the standings and sit three points above in eighth spot. Read on to find our prediction of the match.

This is the first meeting between the Seagulls and the Black Cats in 15 years and their first in the English top division in more than 40 years. Both teams have ambitions of qualifying for Europe come the end of the season.

They will want to remain in the picture, and winning against a direct rival will add more flight to the wings. Brighton are heavily favored by bookmakers to take the full spoils at the Amex, while a draw is seen as the second-most likely result.

Brighton - Sunderland: Form Analysis

Brighton are in a slump, having failed to win in three games, losing twice. After scoring three goals in a disheartening 4-3 loss at home to Aston Villa, goals have dried up for Fabian Huzeler’s men.

They have scored just once in their last two matches and suffered a 2-0 loss away to Liverpool last time out. Brighton have blown hot and cold this season. They have managed six wins and drawn a further five in 16 games.

With 23 points, they find themselves in a crowded race for Europe with just six points separating sixth from 15th. The hosts were not in action in midweek, having already been eliminated from the EFL Cup.

The Black Cats are back in shape after the derby win.

Sunderland were also not in action as the League Cup took center stage this week. As both teams have had a full week of preparation, we should expect a blockbuster clash.

The visitors have regressed after an exciting return to the topflight and have won just twice in their last seven games. At one point, Regis Le Bris’ men sat amongst the top two but have now dropped out of the European places.

Sunderland got back on track last time out, defeating historic rivals Newcastle by a solitary goal at home in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Brighton & Sunderland Squad Analysis

Brighton have had to do without Adam Webster, Solly March, and Stefanos Tzimas for a lengthy period due to injuries. The three alongside AFCON-bound Carlos Baleba will miss Saturday’s game.

Danny Welbeck will be among the senior players expected to lead the team to winning ways. He has scored seven goals in the league.

On an xG of 5.63, he should be resuming his striking duties after starting from the bench last time out. Yankuba Minteh has laid on four assists and will be another to look out for here.

Sunderland are rocked by player exits as a number of them head out to the AFCON.

Sunderland have been severely affected by the AFCON tournament that starts this weekend. The club will have to do without six players, the most in the Premier League, for at least two weeks.

The absentees are Noah Sadiki, Arthur Masuaku, Reinildo, Bertrand Traore, Habib Diarra, and Chemsdine Talbi. Diarra, though, who has missed significant time this season, will be with the club this weekend before departing.

Among the star players staying put is Wilson Isidor, who has netted four times in the league, while fellow striker Brian Brobbey has scored twice.

Our Brighton vs Sunderland Prediction

Our prediction for Brighton v Sunderland is that Brighton wins. Brighton are going through a slump and haven’t won in three outings. They are, however, our choice to win as they are home, where they have enjoyed most of their success.

The hosts have registered four of their six league wins at the Amex. As for Sunderland, though they won a crucial derby last time out, they have a lot of things going against them for this clash. The visitors have suffered all of their losses this season away from home. They also arrive heavily depleted, with five players away on international duty and another three out injured.
