Sunday marks the end of the Copa America, as Brazil and Peru slog it out for glory in the final. These two sides are going head to head following great tournaments so far, but can surprise finalists Peru pull off a result which would see them grab the trophy? Few expected them to get this far after finishing up third in their group, but can they continue to shock us this summer? It’s going to take a huge performance from them to prevent Brazil claiming their first Copa America title since 2007. The hosts have enjoyed a solid tournament overall, which has gone some way to make up for the problems from the 2014 World Cup. Brazil crumbled under the pressure of hosting then, but this time around they’re in the final with a chance to lift silverware. Having gone out in the last eight of the 2018 World Cup, Brazil are certainly showing signs of improvement this summer. They’ve struggled to lift major silverware in recent years, with just one Confederations Cup in the last 11 years. Will Brazil continue their unbeaten run and break that wait for a trophy? Peru haven’t won this competition since 1975, but they’ve ben to the last eight or later on nine consecutive occasions. They’ve now finished in the top three in three of the last four tournaments, so there’s clear progress from Peru so far. The only issue is that they tend to struggle when the action gets serious – see their opening defeats at the 2018 World Cup. Peru also need to see off a Brazil side who recorded their best display when these two met in the group stage. The Brazilians ran out 5-0 winners in the last clash between them, which knocked Peru down to third in the standings. While they were able to see off Chile, Peru drew with Venezuela and Uruguay alongside their heavy loss to Brazil. That doesn’t exactly mark them out as contenders in our eyes, especially given that they’ve lost five of their last six meetings with Brazil going into this game.
