Australia take on Portugal in their final match in Pool C of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. They are third in the pool going into the weekend with Portugal in bottom place. The writing may well be on the wall for the Wallabies even before this game begins on Sunday. If Fiji beat Georgia on Saturday and earn a bonus point, then Australia will be knocked out of the tournament. Never have they failed to make it out of the pool stage but that may well happen this weekend. Even if Fiji win without a bonus point (four tries are needed to earn that), then Australia will still be eliminated if Fiji earn a point in their final game against Portugal. Australia began this Rugby World Cup with a 35-15 win over Georgia but since then they have lost to both Fiji and Wales leaving them in deep trouble. They have been beaten in eight of their last ten matches but should still be able to get a comfortable win over Portugal.
The Portuguese side have played two games so far in this pool. They began with a 28-8 loss to Wales but then drew 18-18 with Georgia. The latter game was so nearly a win for them but Georgia scored a late try to deny them victory. This is only the second Rugby World Cup finals appearance for the Wolves. They'd lost five successive matches before the draw with Georgia. They may well put in another good performance but Australia, even if eliminated already, will want to end this pool with a good performance. We tip them to beat Portugal on a -18 point handicap.
