Argentina crashed out of the Copa America in midweek, as Lionel Messi’s hopes of an international trophy were squashed again. The forward failed to find the net in the 2-0 loss to old rivals Brazil, while their defence was abysmal in the defeat. That’s left Argentina facing off with Chile this weekend in the third-place playoff, but can Argentina win this clash and eliminate their recent hoodoo against the Chileans in this competition? Chile were the reigning champions until their loss to Peru in the early hours of Thursday. They were hoping for a rare treble, having won the 2015 and 2016 editions of the tournament. However, Chile fell apart in their hat-trick bid. They are now set up to face Argentina, the side who they’ve beaten in the last two Copa America finals. On both occasions, the two played out a 0-0 draw and the Chileans edged out Argentina on penalties. Will they claim another success, or can Messi and co. get some revenge? With back to back 0-0 draws in Copa America meetings, it’s easy to see a low scoring clash between these two sides. After all, Chile only made it to the last four thanks to a 0-0 draw and penalty shootout win over Uruguay. They continue to have one of the most experienced defences in the country, so we expect them to deal with this Argentine attack. Argentina have hardly been free-flowing here anyway, with all five of their games finishing with under 2.5 goals scored. That includes their blunt display against Brazil, along with wins over Qatar and Venezuela. On both occasions, they were presented with underperforming defences, which allowed them to make the breakthrough. That’s not something to expect from a Chile side who have limited time left with the big names at the heart of their backline.

Our Argentina vs Chile Prediction
There has been a move away from the high-scoring third-place playoff in recent years. That can be seen at the last World Cup and in the recent UEFA Nations League. These two should be serious in their final game, while if they do rotate its likely to be the attack which they weaken. Given that Chile come into this game having failed to score in three matches while Argentina have seen five straight games with fewer than three goals we are going with under 2.5 as our tip in this one.
