Algeria start the defence of their AFCON title with a game against Sierra Leone in Group E of the 2021 AFCON. One of the high ranking nations at the competition, Algeria go to the game as favorites to not only bag three points but also go all the way to the final. They are on a 25-game unbeaten run and head here after winning the FIFA Arab Cup in December. Most of the Algeria team that won the 2019 AFCON title is still intact. It is 30 games for the team since winning the title and they’ve lost just once, in the African Nations Championship, against Morocco. They’ve even added another title, the Arab Cup, which served as a good warm up tournament ahead of this competition. Ahead of their opener, they trounced Ghana 3-0 in a friendly game and will be very confident here.

As Algeria won the AFCON title in the last edition, Sierra Leone were serving a FIFA ban. They are back and managed to squeeze themselves through to the finals after a controversial game against Benin. Sierra Leone features among the lowest ranked nations at this competition and they don’t have a very strong run coming to this game. In the last 17 matches, they have two wins and they go to this game having failed to score in four of their last five matches. Sierra Leone last played competitively in June 2021, the game against Benin, winning 1-0 to qualify for this competition. They’ve played two friendly matches, against Ethiopia and Comoros, failing to score in both. They lost 2-0 to Comoros in the most recent one.
