It was 29 years ago that Algeria last won this tournament. They haven't fared too well in it since that victory with only one semi-final appearance nine years ago. They came into these finals in good shape unbeten in six matches with their last defeat being in November 2018. The Algerians put in a great display in the group stages of this tournament winning all three games without conceding a goal. Wins came against Senegal (who they may meet in the final), Kenya and Tanzania. Another smooth win came in the last sixteen as they defeated Guinea 3-0. They finally conceded a goal when drawing 1-1 with Ivory Coast before winning on penalties

Nigeria last won this title six years ago but this is the first time since then that they have qualified for the finals. They also failed to get out of their group in last year's World Cup. Just like their opponents they won their first two matches in this tournament with victories over Burundi and Guinea. Then they suffered a surprise 2-0 loss to Madagascar, who went on to reach the last eight. That defeat saw them finish second in their group and a last sixteen meeting with defending champions Cameroon. They led 1-0 but trailed 2-1 at half time. Two second-half goals took them into the quarter finals where they beat Egypt's conquerors South Africa 1-0. Algeria have won six of their last seven games against their opponents, they can make it seven with a narrow win in this last four match.
