Can Alex Michelsen finally win at Roland Garros. The American has lost his two previous matches in this outdoor clay court Grand Slam. Monday sees him face fellow unseeded player Alexander Shevchenko. Michelsen was in good form in Geneva last week and our prediction is that he can win here.
Either seventh seed Taylor Fritz or wild card Nishesh Basavareddy will be the winner's second round opponent.
Alex Michelsen has only won 12 games in his two losses at Roland Garros. He made a slow start to this season's clay court season but has improved in recent weeks. A third round in Madrid was followed last week by a run to the quarter-finals in Geneva.
He beat Stan Wawrinka and Sebastian Baez before losing in three sets to eventual champion Learner Tien.
Alexander Shevchenko is 88th in the live rankings and that's 46 places below Michelsen. Shevchenko lost in round two of this Grand Slam last year but only after being reinstated as a lucky loser. This year has seen him win six of his 13 clay court matches.
Shevchenko is yet to get past the second round of an ATP Tour clay court tournament this year.
