Jiri Lehecka, the 32nd seed, and the unseeded Alex Michelsen will meet in the second round of the Australian Open. The winner will then advance to play either Alexander Zverev or Lukas Klein. Alex Michelsen is coming off a 3-1 victory over wildcard James McCabe. The match marking his debut in this major, lasted close to three hours. Michelsen made his tour debut last season and had a taste of a Grand Slam at the US Open. He won his first-round match but was eliminated right after, he will hope to go further here. The young American has had a strong start to the year and currently has compiled a 5-2 record. This has seen him move up nine places to 82nd in the live ranking which is a new career high.
Jiri Lehecka produced his best-ever result at a Grand Slam in Melbourne last season. He recorded a quarterfinal finish in what was his second appearance here. The Czech number one will be eager to at the very least equal this feat. Lehecka is in fine form at the moment and arrives for this match having won his last six fixtures. He arrived in Melbourne after triumphing in Adelaide to win his first-ever tour title. Lehecka has carried that momentum with him and was impeccable in his first-round tie with Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The Czech won in straight sets for his sixth victory in eight appearances in 2024. He is currently ranked 31st in the live ranking.
