Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz faces unseeded Jack Draper in a tricky Madrid Masters second round match. Up next for the winner of this match is either 31st seed Arthur Fils or unseeded Daniel Altmaier. These two players met recently in the outdoor clay court tournament held in Monte Carlo. That's the same surface as is being played on in this match and on that occasion, Hurkacz won in three sets, losing the middle one. The Pole went on to reach the last 16 where he lost to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud. Before that, Hurkacz won the Estoril clay court title. This is his first tournament since Monte Carlo and he's ninth in the live rankings. His best run in this tournament is a quarter-final two years ago.

Jack Draper is up to 39th in the live rankings after beating qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis in round one. It took him three sets to do so but was never behind in the match. He's still got an outside chance of being seeded at Roland Garros.this year. He trails Hurkacz 3-1 in previous meetings with both their matches on clay being lost. Each of their best-of-three sets matches has gone to a final set and we could have another close match here.
