The most unforgiving circuit of Max Verstappen’s illustrious career is set to deliver another defining test as the Formula 1 season enters Round 17. The Dutchman will battle the world’s top drivers beneath the floodlights of the iconic Marina Bay Street Circuit in the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix this weekend.

Resurgent Verstappen To Tame Marina Bay Streets for Red Bull

Despite possessing a truly astonishing haul of silverware throughout his incredible career, Max Verstappen has famously never stood on the top step of the podium at the Singapore Grand Prix.

However, that could change this weekend as the Dutchman stormed to a stunning Sprint pole position last night, beating a heavily penalised George Russell and a competitive field of Ferraris and McLarens at the Marina Bay Circuit.

Red Bull seems to have found the setup to help Verstappen challenge for a long-awaited Singapore victory!

Verstappen delivered a stunning lap in Sprint Qualifying, upsetting F1 predictions that Mercedes would be the strongest through Marina Bay’s tight corners. Red Bull has previously struggled to find the right balance in Singapore, but its latest mechanical setup appears to have improved the RB22’s stability through the closing sectors.

The Dutchman’s control was particularly evident in his Friday qualifying lap, pushing close to the walls to secure a time that put his competitors on the back foot, and his team will now approach tomorrow’s 19-lap Sprint with optimism, especially if he can use his straight-line speed to keep challengers at bay.

Chasing Pack: Russell Hit With Penalty As Leclerc and Piastri Look to Challenge

Mercedes were expected to be Verstappen’s biggest challenge this weekend, but the Silver Arrows now face an unwelcome complication following a significant ruling from the FIA stewards.

Russell will start from the back of the grid for the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix!

The Brit produced an excellent P2 in Sprint Qualifying, but Mercedes were forced to make a tactical power unit swap in Russell’s W17 package following a diagnostic failure during final checks, meaning he has been slapped with a mandatory back-of-the-grid penalty.

Adding to Mercedes’ troubles, championship leader Kimi Antonelli struggled to bring his tyres up to temperature on Singapore’s abrasive surface. The Italian could only manage P7, leaving the Brackley-based team with plenty of work to do if it hopes to challenge Verstappen from the front.

Ferrari and McLaren remain firmly in contention, with both teams placing a driver inside the top five. Charles Leclerc claimed third for the Scuderia, while Oscar Piastri qualified fourth for McLaren. Lando Norris finished fifth after losing valuable time with a lock-up in the penultimate corner.

Leclerc could have a valuable card to play if Ferrari’s apparent tyre-management advantage holds up. By conserving his rubber while Verstappen pushes hard, he may be able to close in and launch a late attack during the closing stages.
