West Ham put up a brave effort against Liverpool on Tuesday but lost 3-2. That leaves them 18th in the table, six places and ten points behind Southampton. The Hammers are only a point from safety so it is a recoverable situation. With 17th placed Aston Villa in the EFL Cup final this weekend, a point would take West Ham above Villa but it’s a win they need. West Ham have no wins in their last six league matches with only two points earned. This is a vital game for them because their next four games are all against sides in the top nine. Home form isn’t helping them in their battle against relegation. Only one of their last ten home league games has been won. With home fixtures against both Watford and Aston Villa, their form at the London Stadium is going to be crucial. The same applies to their defending with only one clean sheet in their last ten league matches. They did go to Southampton and win 1-0 though, a repeat of that would be perfect for them.

Southampton are 12th in the table but could yet qualify for the Europa League. They are only seven points behind fifth place and won their last game 2-0 at home to Aston Villa. Before that though, they had lost two straight league games. Their away league form is mixed but they had won four in a row (including victories at both Chelsea and Leicester City) before a 4-0 loss at Anfield. This is a game that Southampton are well capable of winning.  They are only seven points off fifth place, not a situation they were thinking of being in when struggling down at the bottom of the table earlier in the season. With West Ham in trouble and having defensive problems, players such as Ings, Armstrong and Long could cause a lot of damage. Go for an away victory in this match.
