Matchday 39 in the English Championship sees sixth-place West Brom hosting fourth-placed Sunderland at the Hawthorns on Saturday. The Baggies and the Black Cats are battling for position in the promotion playoff positions. Read on for our match prediction!
West Brom have been seeing their grip on the playoffs slipping after a run of only one win in their last four matches. They suffered a gut punch in their last outing away to Norwich as the Canaries netted a stoppage time goal to steal all three points at the death.
The defeat marked the end of a six-match unbeaten run for West Brom, although they drew four games during that stretch. That leaves the hosts now even on points and leading on goal differential against both seventh-placed Middlesbrough and eighth-place Bristol.
Sunderland secured a 1-0 home win over Millwall last weekend, their third victory in the last five games (1D, 1L). It also marked the team’s first clean sheet in seven games and extended their lead over fifth-place Coventry to a massive 13 points.
The Black Cats now trail the automatic promotion places by nine points with seven games remaining in the campaign. They’ve struggled in some of their recent away trips, however, losing two of the last three.

Our West Brom vs Sunderland Prediction
West Brom are a tough team to beat, with their eight losses in 39 league matches being the fifth lowest in the Championship. They’ve been in good form on home soil, with clean sheet wins in two of their last three appearances.
That could ultimately be the difference here, especially as the visiting Sunderland have seen their away form slump in recent weeks. With West Brom’s tendency to finish level, taking the insurance on the draw is prudent. Our West Brom vs Sunderland prediction: West Brom draw no bet.
