It has been a torrid period for Villarreal since winning the Europa League. Not much has gone their way on the pitch and they will be out to end the unwanted run when they open their La Liga charge on Monday at home to Granada. Villarreal are coming from yet another winless outing – defeat on post match penalties at the hands of Chelsea. Now they are on a run of nine matches without a win inside 90 minutes. Veteran Raul Albiol saw his spot kick saved against Chelsea, denying his team more silverware and he will be expected to rise from that and provide leadership here. A run of just one clean sheet in nine matches will put a dent on their confidence defensively, especially after conceding two or more in three of the last four. However, they will be more optimistic when looking at their attacking numbers, having scored in 11 of the last 12 matches. A run of six wins in their last 10 home matches should also raise levels of optimism.

Granada have had a less intensive preseason period and should get to this game fresher than their hosts. Thy played five preseason matches, winning three and losing just one. They head to this game unbeaten in six matches and will be optimistic of a good start after winning their last two matches. They’ve scored in seven of their last 10 matches and should have the touch in attack but having just two clean sheets in 10 will pose a concern defensively. They’ve also not done so well away from home, losing eight and winning two of their last 10 matches. They’ve however failed to score in just one of the 10 away matches, a 2-0 loss to Manchester United.
