French Open 19th seed Victoria Azarenka and world number 59 Nadia Podoroska will face off in the tournament’s first round. The winner of this third career meeting between the two will then play Mirra Andreeva or Emina Bektas next. Victoria Azarenka has won both times she has squared off with Podoroska. Both matches were played last year but none won on clay. As a former Roland Garros semi-finalist, Azarenka will be confident of making a winning start in what is her 17th appearance here. The two-time Grand Slam champion is having a strong season and has compiled a 20-9 record. This has resulted in two semi-final finishes in Brisbane and Miami as well as quarter-final runs in Rome and Doha. The former world number one begins the week up two places to 19th in the live ranking.

Nadia Podoroska is also a former French Open semi-finalist. She achieved this feat in 2020 and became the first qualifier to ever progress as far at Roland Garros. The Argentine has appeared here two more times since then and unfortunately hasn’t been able to replicate that run. She has not progressed past the second round. Podoroska is having a tough season and has won just one more match than the 14 she has lost. Her best result so far is a title-winning run on clay at the San Luis Potosi Challenger. The 27-year-old hasn’t won more than two matches at a tour event and has suffered most of her defeats in the first round. Podoroska was eliminated in the second round in Rabar and starts her campaign in Paris ranked 59th in the WTA.
