The NHL Stanley Cup gets underway with the first game of this best of seven series between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Florida Panthers. One of these two teams will claim their first ever championship. The Panthers have experienced a magical playoff run after entering the postseason as the second Wildcard team. They knocked off the holders of the NHL’s best record in the Boston Bruins by staging a jaw-dropping 3-1 comeback to win the first round series in seven games. Florida would follow that up with eliminating the second-seed Maple Leafs in just five games before sweeping the Hurricanes in the Conference Finals. The Panthers have continued to gain momentum and look almost unstoppable at the moment. Their 4-3 win over Carolina to finish off the sweep means that Florida have now won five straight and an incredible 11 of their last 12.
Vegas will be tasked with putting a stop to this runaway Panthers train. The Golden Knights are making their second Stanley Cup Finals appearance since their foundation in 2017. Their only other appearance at this stage occurred in 2018 in the team’s first season in the NHL. Vegas would lose 4-1 to the Capitals in that Stanley Cup and they will be desperate to redeem themselves here. The Golden Knights have put up consistent results this season and entered the playoffs as the top seed. They’ve never needed more than six games to dispose of their opponents in this postseason run, eliminating the Jets in five, the Oilers in six and the Stars in six. Vegas bounced back from a two game losing streak to close out the series against Dallas with a dominant 6-0 win in their last outing.
