Tottenham Hotspur’s season starts with a home match against champions Manchester City. While this is easily the top fixture of the opening weekend, it will be dominated by the transfer saga involving Harry Kane. The striker is said to be holding out for a move from Spurs to Manchester City but his club is keen on holding on him. That aside, new Spurs manager Nuno Esprito Santo is eying a good start to his tenure, after a fine run in preseason, which ended with a win over Arsenal. Spurs also drew with Chelsea and will feel good enough to stand up against City, going to this game unbeaten in six matches. They’ve scored in each of these six matches but managed just two clean sheets while seven of their last 10 matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Notably, they’ve managed to hold their own in Kane’s absence, scoring 10 goals in their five preseason games. Tottenham haven’t lost to City at home in their last three meetings, and will hope to keep that run going.

These two sides met three times last season and City won the last two; the most recent in the League Cup final. They head to this game straight from a 1-0 loss to Leicester City in the Community Shield, the second time in 10 matches that they failed to score. They had scored 10 goals in their earlier three matches before the Leicester loss and will retain that potency going here. Riyad Mahrez and Samuel Edozie did well in preseason, scoring in all three friendly games and while Edozie may be overlooked here, Mahrez seems to be a sure starter. City have also acquired Jack Grealish, in a big-money move and with a number of players who were at Euro 2020 expected to miss, they’ll do with Grealish’s impact upfront. In six of their last 10 matches, they have scored two or more goals and six have produced over 2.5 goals.
